What Winter Storm Uri taught the northwest side
In February 2021, Winter Storm Uri brought single-digit lows that local plumbing is not built for. The city's water system warned of a multitude of burst pipes once temperatures rose back above freezing, and some of the longest water outages lingered in northwest Bexar County along I-10.
The utility does not repair leaks on private property, and plumbers were expected to be scarce. That is the situation to plan for: the plumber fixes the pipe, and drying the house should start as soon as the water is off.
Why pipes break here
Water lines here often run only about 18 inches underground, and shallow pipes freeze more easily. Pipes in exterior walls, attics and garages are the most exposed. When a frozen pipe splits, nothing happens until it thaws, and then water runs into walls and ceilings, sometimes in several places at once.
Another freeze warning hit San Antonio in January 2026. They are rare, but they keep coming.
Hail on the northwest side
The April 12, 2016 hailstorm hit northwest Bexar County first, with hail up to 4.5 inches in Helotes, before tracking east across the city. A hail-damaged roof can leak into the attic and ceiling at the next heavy rain. See storm damage cleanup.
What we do after a freeze break
We find every place the water reached with moisture readings, remove what cannot be dried, and dry the structure with the house closed up. Every job starts with a free inspection and an itemized estimate, and we provide moisture readings, photos and a detailed estimate for your claim. More on water damage restoration.
